Canada has recently increased travel restrictions for all air travellers arriving from outside the country with the exception of the United States. Now travellers have to complete their COVID test at the airport when they arrive. The rules are applicable to both vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers. Also, travellers will need to stay isolated until they receive their COVID-test report.  All of these precautions for air travel are being taken in response to the new Omicron or COVID-19 Variant.

With this, Canada has also restricted entry from ten countries, which are Egypt, Nigeria, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini, and Lestho. Foreign nationals from these countries are not allowed to enter Canada. It includes foreign nationals who are directly travelling from these countries or have visited these countries in the last 14 days. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are allowed to return to Canada from these countries, but they have to follow the 14-day quarantine and extensive COVID-19 requirements.

How to enter Canada during COVID-19?

Travellers who are fully COVID-19 vaccinated are eligible to enter Canada as long as they adhere to the special travel restrictions. The traveller needs to obtain the entire series of one of the COVID-19 vaccines approved to enter Canada. Travellers need to receive their last dose at least 14 days before travelling to Canada. Currently, Canada is accepting seven vaccines that include Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/Covishield, Johnson & Johnson, Sinopharm, Sinovac, and Covaxin. Canada does not consider you fully immunised if you were vaccinated with any other vaccine.

Children who are under the age of 12 and travelling with fully vaccinated guardians/ parents are allowed to enter Canada and are not subject to quarantine, but they must adhere to some specific restrictions like avoiding camps, schools, and daycares.

If you are not vaccinated or partially vaccinated against COVID-19, then you need to meet one of the exemptions to Canada’s travel restrictions and adhere to Canada’s specific travel requirements. The following travellers can enter Canada even if they are unvaccinated:

  • Canadian Citizens and Canadian permanent residents
  • Canadian permanent resident’s and Canadian citizen’s immediate family members who travel to Canada due to non-discretionary reasons.
  • Canadian citizens and permanent residents extended family members or their partners who have applied for written authorization form IRCC
  • Immediate family members of temporary residents residing in Canada who get written authorization from IRCC
  • COPR holders with valid CORP
  • Temporary workers with valid work permit or approved for work permit but have not issues the work permit yet.
  • IEC Participants who don’t have their activated work permits yet but have a valid job offer can enter. The job offer doesn’t have to be in an essential sector.
