Program Description:
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program is for skilled workers with work experience in Canada. Under this program, they can apply to become permanent residents. The CEC is one of the three federal immigration programs administered via the Express Entry online application system for skilled workers.
Key Program highlights
In 2008, IRCC introduced the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) as a route to permanent residence for candidates with eligible work experience in Canada. It was developed for temporary foreign workers and foreign graduates with qualifying Canadian work experience. The program criteria include qualified, skilled Canadian work experience and a minimum English or French proficiency level. The program targets those who have already established themselves in professional work experience in Canada and have demonstrated the ability to integrate well and contribute to the Canadian economy. About 30,563 invitations were issued to CEC Candidates in 2019 under the economic immigration program.
Program Eligibility Requirements
- 1-year skilled work experience in Canada. This work experience must be within the last three years before submitting your application under this program. The work experience must be either full-time or an equal amount in part-time work.
The CEC program’s work experience must be under skill 0, A & B of the National Occupational Classification (NOC). The work experience can be in 1 or more NOC 0, A, or B jobs. The NOC is a list of all the occupations in the Canadian labor market. NOC is used to classify jobs according to duties, skills, talents, and work settings for different positions.
- Skilled type 0 – Managerial Jobs.
- Skilled type A – Professional Jobs.
- Skilled type B – Technical jobs and skilled trade.
Candidates must show that while working in their primary occupation, they performed the duties set out in the lead statement of the occupational description in the NOC; this will include all the essential duties and most of the primary responsibilities listed.
Candidates must show they were authorized to work in Canada under a valid resident status when they gained their work experience in Canada.
Candidates need to determine their NOC code for their primary occupation and must ensure their job duties match with the NOC code for their primary occupation. Use the following links to choose your NOC.

- Language requirement:
Candidates for the CEC program must prove their language abilities by taking any of the approved language tests. Write your language test for either English or French or both. Get minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in all four abilities if your NOC is 0 or A and CLB 5 if your NOC is B, i.e., speaking, reading, listening, and writing for English Test result is valid for two years.
Acceptable English language test:
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) Note: Register for the CELPIP-General test.
- International English Language Testing System ( IELTS). Book your test at British Council IELTS Online Application
Note: Register for the IELTS English General Training Test.
Acceptable French Language Test:
- Test d’evaluation de français (TEF).

- Education:
There is no education requirement for the Canadian Experience Class. However, you can increase your rank in the Express Entry Pool if you have Educational experience in Canada or outside of Canada. If your Educational credentials are outside of Canada, you must evaluate your credentials.

The skilled work experience must be:
- In the same type of job using the NOC as the job you want to use for your immigration application this is called your primary occupation.
ii.Within the last 10 years.
iii. Paid work either through wages or earned commission. Note: Volunteer work or unpaid internships is not acceptable.
- Att least 1 year of continuous work or 30 hours per week. Candidates can prove this in 3 different ways as follows:
Full-time at 1 job | 30 hours/week for 12 months = 1 year full time |
Equal amount in part-time | 15 hours/week for 24 months = 1 year full time |
Full-time at more than 1 job | 30 hours/week for 12 months at more than 1 job = 1 year full time |

How to Apply
There are two steps to apply for the CEC program: Creating your profile and submitting your PR application. Both steps are done online.
Step 1: Submit your Express Entry profile:
Submitting an express entry profile is done by filling an online form. To create your profile, you need to answer some eligibility questions, which takes about 15 minutes to complete through this link. After you completed the eligibility questions, you will be issued a number as your reference code. You will need this number to move your information from the eligibility tool to your Express Entry profile.
If you are eligible, you will receive instruction to create an online account to fill out an Express Entry profile. Enter your reference number (if you have one) and enter your personal information, language test details, and National Occupation Classification (NOC Code).
After you submit your Express Entry profile, you will know your score to determine your place in the Express Entry Pool using the Comprehensive Ranking System. Visit this link to see how you are ranked in the express entry pool.
You have 60 days to complete and submit your express entry profile. Your profile is valid for one year, but you can submit another profile if you did not receive an ITA within one year.
Note: Submitting an online Express Entry profile does not guarantee that you will be invited to apply for permanent residence.
Step 2: Apply for Permanent Residence
Applying for a Permanent Resident Visa after receiving an invitation to apply is done through the express entry online system. You will need to fill out the online forms through the account you created while submitting your express entry profile. Scan and upload all your supporting documents, as listed above. Pay your application fees and submit your completed application.

Latest Program Updates
Due to Covid-19 Pandemic in 2020 and travel restrictions, the IRCC had program-specific draws to invite candidates who most likely are already in Canada. Ten draws were targeted towards the Canadian Experience Class from March 23 to August 20, 2020. The lowest CRS score was 431 on June 25, 2020, while the highest CRS score was 467 on March 23, 2020 draw. Find below information on all the draws explicitly made to target CEC candidates.
