Canadian temporary work permit policy extended until February 28, 2022

Extension of a temporary policy that came into action since last year has been announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This policy was created to allow the temporary residents to obtain work permits and is extended until February 28, 2022.  

Visitors that have been in Canada since August 24, 2020 having valid visitor status are eligible to apply for a work permit. They need to meet the employer requirements and can apply from within Canada. However, it is meant to be a temporary regulatory change undertaken due to the pandemic. Earlier, it was not possible for the individuals with a visitor’s visa to obtain a work permit without the need to leave the country. The main motive of this policy was to help the employers to find the workers and visitors to enter the workforce. This helped both the employers and temporary visitors in Canada to overcome the challenges faced due to the pandemic.  

Requirements that need to be met in order to obtain an employer-specific work permit are listed below:

• Visitors need to have a valid temporary status at the time of applying for work permit
• Need to apply for an employer-specific work permit
• Must stay in the country with a valid status
• Also, the application must be submitted till February 28, 2022 only

Under this temporary policy, foreign nationals who already had a work permit in the last one year can apply for an interim work authorization. If all the above mentioned requirements are met, the foreign nationals can apply for their new employer while they are waiting for their pending application.

Requirements for applying for interim work authorization are listed below:   

• At the time of submitting the application, these foreign nationals must have valid temporary status
• They must remain in Canada with valid status
• Willing to work for the employer and in the occupation mentioned on the work permit
• Must also fill an IRCC web form

The main beneficiary of this interim work authorization will be the foreign nationals who have managed to come to Canada amidst all these travel restrictions. Canada reopened its borders for U.S. citizens since August and for the fully vaccinated travellers from all other countries from September 7, 2021.
