All foreign nationals coming to Canada who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents can enter as a visitor, student or worker if issued with a visa, study permit and work permit. When they enter Canada, they are given temporary resident status for a limited period of time.
Foreign nationals in Canada under any of the temporary resident visas can apply for an extension if they plan to stay in Canada beyond the duration allowed on their visa or permit.

It is required that your current temporary resident status is still valid when you apply for an extension of your stay. You should apply for a work and study permit at least 30 days before your current status expires.

A temporary resident in Canada can apply for a visitor record to extend stay as a visitor or change their work or study permit status to visitor record. Visitors must apply for the visitor’s record before their current status expires.
A student or worker can also apply to extend or change the condition of their permit. The student or worker must apply for an extension at least 30 days before their current study or work permit expires. If the visa or permit has expired, the applicant must apply for the restoration of status.
In most cases, you must apply online to extend your stay as a visitor, student or worker.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada renewed a temporary public policy that will provide more time for temporary residents to apply to restore their legal status in Canada. Under the public policy, visitors, students and workers whose valid temporary status expired, or expires, between January 30, 2020, and May 31, 2021 will have until August 31, 2021, to restore their status.
