In every ten years, significant structural updating happens in The National Occupational Classification (NOC). All the alterations are done after a detailed review of the current Classification’s structure as well as the already existing occupational categories. The new release of the NOC is peaking in the current year. This implies the major changes are expected in the nature of employment and the economy.
The new NOC 2021 presents structural alterations such as aggregation or mergers and splits, unit group additions and the rearrangement of select groups under the comprehensive occupational categories and Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) categories.
By all these changes applicable in the new NOC 2021, various departments of the Canadian government will be affected. And out of all, the most impacted would be the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) department.
Overview of the changes:
Earlier, the NOC codes were of 4 digits but now they would be of 5 digits. Also, the already existing NOC Skill levels will no longer be in use (level 0, level A, level B, level C and level D). Instead Training, Education, Experience and Responsibility referred to as (TEER) would be applicable now. This applies six TEER levels; 0, 1,2,3,4, and 5.
Previous NOC skill levels 0 and A would both not be affected much by these changes. On the other hand, NOC skill level B will be affected the most as downgrading of 47 NOC skill level B professions will occur. Further, this implies that the candidates applying through the Express Entry system will be impacted directly. All these changes will be applicable in late 2022, till then the same NOC classification will be applied.
Moreover, the current four digit codification system would no longer exist as it will be replaced by the new five-digit system.
