Foreign nationals visiting Canada should ask if they require a visa to enter the country. Many nations are visa-exempt, and citizens need an eTA to enter.
American citizens are exempt from this requirement if they have an American passport. Temporary visas allow a foreign national to visit Canada for a limited time.
Canada offers four types of temporary visas.
- Work
- Study
- International Experience Canada
- Visiting
There are three main types of work visa:
- Open
- Employer-specific
- Post-graduate
A foreign national can work anywhere in Canada for any employer without that business having to go through a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
LMIA permits allow foreign nationals to work for employers who have tried to find Canadians to do their jobs. On the other hand, employer-specific work permits are for specific employers who can hire a foreign national who then has to get an employer-specific visa.
Through agreements with many other countries, Canada issues work permits for those who want to come here. Work permits can be applied for a working holiday, co-op internships, or professional development programmes.
Study visa
Students who want to study in Canada for more than six months need a Study Permit. International students also need to show they have enough funds to support themselves in Canada. About a third of international students coming to Canada plan on seeking permanent residence once they graduate.
Visitor visa
Visitors to Canada can apply for one of the three types of visas. Single entry, multiple entries, or super-visa holders can stay in the country for a decade. The Super Visa is meant to be a two-year visa—much longer than the usual six months.
